Program Components
Academic/Education:
Through volunteer tutors/mentors, Visible Horizons provides weekly academic tutoring for youth in grades K-12. The program focuses on academic and scholastic achievement, improved literacy, and higher education goals.
Career Development:
Vocational and career interests are explored and promoted. Individual skill development is encouraged. Specific occupational prerequisites are emphazied.
Entrepreneurship:
Program youth are introduced to entrepreneurship through the design, construction, display and sale of cultural art and crafts produced during weekly program sessions. Expenses for materials, exhibit fees and administration are deducted, resulting in an average net profit of 85% earned and paid to the youth. The focus of this component is to teach basic business skills.
Social and civic participation is arranged for youth to become involved in multicultural events and activities held throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area. Cultural knowledge is shared, within the program, and publicly, through the youth participant's traditional dance, singing, drumming, and art exhibits.
Life Skills:
All program youth participate in activies designed to build on developmental assets and prepare them for a healthful life; parents, teachers and other adult role models serve as mentors and guidance advisors.
Alcohol/Substance Abuse Education:
All youth participate in regular substance abuse prevention and intervention programs developed specifically for their age groups. Teens have the specialized S.P.I.R.I.T. Program. Collaboration is maintained with other community agencies for youth and family referral.
Summer Camp:
All of the program youth are invited and encouraged to participate in a special Summer Program which focuses on Native American cultural and traditional appreciation and activities.
Family Support:
Visible Horizons provides assistance for basic needs for families by linking them to other community services which could benefit the youth and their family members.
